-Start something that does not require a lot of users to make a profit.

  • keep it regional. Local companies are popular. people like to know where the product comes from.
  • selling through a retailer or reseller — ie a super market or an online store. If you sell via your web site you get 100%. If you sell through a retailer, you’ll need an agreement that gives them part of the profit. They might not let you keep selling via your web site and may want an exclusive relationship.
  • work out your cost price — minimum price of selling to market. cost of making, cost of packaging and delivery, profit for yourself. includes effort and risk. How can you make this cost effective?
  • cash flow- money coming into and out of a business each week. when you get paid for a job is just as important as when you sign an agreement
  • get money from customers before you pay it out. See if you can get paid up front. Get them signed up for direct debit. If they do not like it, see if they would want to do it with a discount or for additional services.
  • match your cash flows- See if you can get your customers to pay before you need to pay your suppliers
  • buy small- small quantities. buy low, sell higher, make sure there is some margin
  • make friends with your supplier.
  • ensure customers are credit-worthy
  • ask people who do business with them if they pay on time
